NEWS:India allows production of ethanol from sugarcane juice molasses

GS-3 environment

Ethanol from Sugarcane Juice & Molasses

1. What is Ethanol?

  • A biofuel (alcohol-based fuel) that can be blended with petrol.
  • Reduces dependence on fossil fuels, lowers emissions, and provides income support to farmers.

2. Sources in India

  1. Sugarcane Juice / Syrup – Direct fermentation of juice to produce ethanol.
  2. Molasses (by-product of sugar industry) – Residue left after extraction of sugar; different grades:
    • C-heavy molasses → Lowest sugar content, least efficient for ethanol.
    • B-heavy molasses → Higher sugar recovery.
    • Sugarcane juice/syrup → Highest ethanol yield, but reduces sugar production.

3. Government Policy Update (2025–26)

  • India has allowed ethanol production directly from sugarcane juice, syrup, and all grades of molasses.
  • Earlier, restrictions existed to safeguard sugar availability.
  • This supports the Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) Programme, targeting 20% blending (E20) by 2025–26.

4. Benefits

Energy Security – Reduces oil imports (India imports ~85% of crude oil).
Environment – Lower CO₂ and particulate emissions compared to pure petrol.
Farmers’ Income – Ensures alternative market for sugarcane, stabilizes sugar prices.
Sugar Industry Support – Helps manage surplus sugar stocks, reduces arrears to farmers.

5. Challenges

⚠️ Food Security vs Fuel – Using cane juice for ethanol may reduce sugar availability.
⚠️ Water Intensive Crop – Sugarcane requires ~2,000–3,000 litres water per kg of sugar → raises sustainability concerns.
⚠️ Logistics & Infrastructure – Need more distilleries, storage, blending facilities.
⚠️ Price Distortion – Balancing sugar prices, ethanol procurement, and fuel prices is tricky.

NEWS:IMD reports rise in mini-cloudbursts forecasts above-normal September rainfall while IMCT assesses flood damage in affected states

GS-3 disaster management

  • IMD reports no increasing trend in cloudbursts but notes a rise in mini-cloudbursts.
  • September 2025 rainfall is expected to be above normal, exceeding the average by 9%.
  • Northwest India received 26% more rainfall than usual during the monsoon season.
  • The Union Home Ministry has formed Inter-Ministerial Central Teams (IMCT) to assess flood damage in affected states.
  • The Centre has released ₹10,498.80 crore to 24 States for relief assistance in 2025-26.

 Mini Cloudburst

  • Cloudburst: Sudden, very heavy rainfall (≥100 mm/hour) over a limited area (~10 km²).
  • Mini Cloudburst:
    • Same phenomenon but on a smaller scale (lower rainfall intensity and area coverage).
    • Usually causes localized flash floods, landslides, and waterlogging, especially in hilly or urban areas.

⚡ Causes

  1. Orographic Effect – Moist air lifted rapidly by mountains, leading to condensation and intense rainfall.
  2. Convective Clouds – Localized thunderstorms (Cumulonimbus clouds) that release rain suddenly.
  3. Climate Change – Warmer atmosphere holds more moisture → sudden downpours becoming more frequent.

📍 Regions Prone in India

  • Himalayan states (J&K, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand).
  • North-eastern states.
  • Urban areas with poor drainage (Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru).

🔍 Impacts

  • Flash floods and landslides → damage to life, property, and infrastructure.
  • Soil erosion and siltation in rivers.
  • Disruption of transport and communication.

NEWS:APK scam defrauds Indians via fake apps causing ₹779.06 crore losses cybercrime jumps 900% between 2021-2025

GS-3 internal security

  • APK fraud is rapidly increasing in India, with a 900% surge in cybercrimes between 2021 and 2025.
  • Between January and July 2025, 2,188 cases of APK fraud were reported in Telangana, resulting in losses of ₹779.06 crore.
  • Fraudsters use fake apps that mimic official portals to steal money, with daily losses ranging from ₹10 to ₹15 lakh.
  • Cybercrime officials estimate that 60-70% of malicious APKs used in India are developed locally.

APK File?

  • APK = Android Package Kit.
  • It’s the file format used by the Android operating system to distribute and install apps.
  • Similar to .exe files in Windows or .dmg files in macOS.

🛠️ Contents of an APK

An APK is basically a compressed package (like a .zip file) containing:

  1. AndroidManifest.xml → metadata (permissions, activities).
  2. classes.dex → compiled Java/Kotlin code for Dalvik/ART runtime.
  3. res/ → resources (images, layouts, sounds).
  4. META-INF/ → signatures and certificates (for app verification).
  5. lib/ → native libraries (.so files for specific hardware).

🔑 How APKs Work

  • APKs are downloaded via Google Play Store or sideloaded manually.
  • Android system unpacks and installs the app.
  • Apps need to be digitally signed to ensure authenticity and security.

⚠️ Security Concerns

  • Sideloading APKs (installing from outside Play Store) → risk of malware, spyware.
  • Fake/malicious APKs can steal data or control device functions.
  • Hence, Android has Play Protect and asks user permission before sideloading.
