SEBI

  • SEBI is a statutory body established on April 12, 1992 in accordance with the provisions of the Securities and Exchange Board of India Act, 1992
  • The headquarters of SEBI is situated in Mumbai. The regional offices of SEBI are located in Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Chennai and Delhi.

Structure of SEBI

  • SEBI Board consists of a Chairman and several other whole time and part time members.
  • SEBI also appoints various committees, whenever required to look into the pressing issues of that time.
  • Further, a Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT) has been constituted to protect the interest of entities that feel aggrieved by SEBI’s decision.
  • SAT consists of a Presiding Officer and two other Members.
  • It has the same powers as vested in a civil court. Further, if any person feels aggrieved by SAT’s decision or order can appeal to the Supreme Court

NEWS: India Navy announces maiden India African exercise IOS Sagar

  • Against the backdrop of massive inroads by China in Africa, the renewed threat of piracy and the continued threat from Houthi rebels to global shipping
  • the Indian Navy has announced initiatives for bolder cooperation with the continent and the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
  • This includes a large-scale multinational exercise titled “Africa India Key Maritime Engagement”, or “AIKEYME”, scheduled to be held with 10 African countries
  • Another cooperation initiative with Africa is the Indian Ocean Ship (IOS) Sagar under which the offshore patrol vessel INS Sunayna is set to be deployed to the Southwest IOR

NEWS:Cheetah mother cubs pelted with stones in M.P. village

ISSUE:

  • A female cheetah and her four cubs were pelted with stones on Monday as they tried to hunt a calf on the outskirts of a village in Madhya Pradesh
  • raising concern among conservationists and wildlife activists over the implementation of Project Cheetah.
  • the incident occurred around near a village in Sheopur district,
  • They where cheetahs from Africa were introduced under the project.
  • All five cheetahs are healthy and safe.
  • Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Project Cheetah Director urged people not to panic and allow the animals to move freely

Project Cheetah:The Phase-1 of the project started in 2022, to restore the population of cheetahs, which were declared extinct in the country in 1952.

  • It involves the translocation of cheetahs from South Africa and Namibia to Kuno National Park.
    • The project is implemented by the NTCA in collaboration with the Madhya Pradesh Forest Department, and Wildlife Institute of India (WII).
  • Under Phase-2 of the Project India is considering sourcing cheetahs from Kenya due to similar habitats.
  • Cheetahs will be translocated to Kuno National Park and Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary (Madhya Pradesh)

NEWS: Sequencing of 10,000 TB genome samples completed

  • ‘Dare2eraD TB’ initiative aims at using genome sequencing to detect drug-resistant TB and capture unique features of the TB bacterium
  • The Department of Biotechnology, under the Ministry of Science and Technology, has completed the genomic sequencing of a third, or 10,000 samples, of the target of 32,500 samples of Mycobacterium tuberculosis — the bacterium behind tuberculosis (TB) — in a bid to improve the understanding of drug-resistant TB and capture unique genomic features of the bacterium in India
  • Of the sequenced samples, 7% are said to be resistant to a single drug

Dare2eraD TB

  • The Union Government has announced the launch of Data-Driven Research to Eradicate TB- “Dare2eraD TB”.
  • It was launched under the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology.
  • The initiative was announced on the occasion of World TB Day (24th March).
  • Dare2eraD TB will be the umbrella TB program comprising of following key initiatives;
    • InTGS – Indian Tuberculosis Genomic Surveillance Consortium.
